What should we know about urinary tract infections?
Urinary tract infections are inflammatory conditions affecting the urinary system, most commonly the bladder and urethra. The most common is cystitis – inflammation of the bladder, which is usually caused by a bacterial infection. This condition most often affects women because the shorter urethra makes it easier for bacteria to enter the bladder. Symptoms include frequent and painful urination, a burning sensation, a strong and sudden urge to urinate, and discomfort in the lower abdomen. In some cases, the urine may be cloudy or bloody and accompanied by an unpleasant odor.
Maintaining good personal hygiene and adequate fluid intake are key to preventing urinary tract infections. It is also important to pay attention to symptoms and seek medical advice promptly when needed, as early diagnosis is crucial for preventing chronic infection or complications. In the case of a bacterial infection, an appropriate antibiotic may be prescribed only by a doctor after assessing the condition. Self-treatment with antibiotics is not advisable, as it may lead to resistance or ineffective treatment. In uncomplicated cases and in cases of frequent recurrences, or in addition to antibiotic treatment, plant-based products may also be used to support urinary function.
